X-ray equipment plays a crucial role in inspecting the quality and integrity of workpiece. They enable internal examinations to detect defects invisible to the naked eye, such as internal cracks, air bubbles, or incomplete welds. These systems capture internal images of metal or solid objects without damaging the workpiece, enhancing the ability to inspect internal workpiece conditions and effectively control quality.
ZEISS METROTOM leverages advanced CT technology to accurately detect defects within workpiece. This article introduces the ZEISS METROTOM by highlighting its key features and comparing its advantages with other measurement technologies.
ZEISS METROTOM is equipped with CT technology that captures a complete scan in a single pass. It provides fast, precise measurements and delivers high-resolution images whether inspecting large or small workpiece.
Key Features of the ZEISS METROTOM
• High Resolution and Sharp Imaging
The ZEISS METROTOM is equipped with a next generation detector that delivers sharp, high-resolution images with reduced noise. This advanced 3K detector technology enables the system to complete scans quickly and efficiently.
• Compare actual workpiece geometry with CAD file
Users can compare the measured dimensions of a workpiece with its CAD file. The X-ray equipment displays the results in different colors to distinguish the desired distortion sizes—blue indicates areas that are smaller than the CAD file, while red shows areas that are larger than the CAD file. This enables users to determine whether the workpiece is OK or NG.
• Measures all points accurately
The system can accurately measure dimensions at every point. In comparison, using a CMM requires more time and involves probing tight corners or small features of the workpiece, which can be a lengthy process, especially for workpiece with intricate details.
• Non-destructive internal structure inspection of workpiece
X-ray equipments can inspect cavities within aluminum, steel, or solid workpiece, detecting air bubbles and internal cracks. Workpiece that pass inspection can be used or sold, unlike other inspection equipments that require destructive sampling, which renders the tested workpiece unusable.
• Uses an open X-ray tube (Open Tube)
The open tube design allows for easy disassembly, greatly reducing maintenance costs. With a micro focal spot size as small as 7 microns, it delivers sharp images while also minimizing maintenance requirements.
・ZEISS scatterControl
Equipped with ZEISS scatterControl, a unique technology that enhances image clarity by filtering out scattered and refracted X-ray waves. This produces images that closely match the actual workpiece, resulting in sharper visuals and highly accurate measurements.
ZEISS is a true expert in metrology, backed by extensive knowledge and years of experience in the field. This expertise has been applied to the development of the METROTOM system, which also includes ZEISS’s proprietary software. By incorporating CMM technology, the software allows users to perform precise dimensional measurements directly within the CT analysis environment. It also enables users to generate globally recognized standard measurement reports. Importantly, there's no need for an annual subscription — the software comes bundled with the X-ray system package.
Previously, users needed multiple types of inspection equipment—such as X-ray equipment for defect detection, 3D measuring machines for inspecting dimensional deviations and tolerances, and microscopes for examining surface appearance. With the ZEISS METROTOM, all of these tasks can now be performed using a single machine.
Measurement and Inspection | Types of Measuring/Inspection Equipment | ZEISS METROTOM |
Speed | CMM Requires measuring multiple points and takes a long time for complex workpiece. It may also be unable to access certain measurement points. | Quickly measures every point with a single scan, producing a detailed 3D image. |
Measurement Accessibility | 2D X-ray equipment Unable to measure or analyze complex or hard to access areas. | |
Measurement Method | 3D Scanner Measures only the external surfaces of the workpiece. | Able to scan and inspect the internal surfaces of workpiece without the need for cutting or sectioning. |
Surface Inspection | Microscope Only inspects the surface of the workpiece and requires cutting the workpiece open to examine internal air bubbles. |
The ZEISS METROTOM offers comprehensive capabilities for both measurement and inspection tasks. It also features a large measuring volume that can accommodate various types of workpiece. Using this single system reduces the need to invest in multiple measuring devices, resulting in significant cost savings.
