KWE-KINTETSU WORLD EXPRESS THAILAND CO., LTD. (KWE Thailand), a Thai subsidiary of Kintetsu World Express, Inc., a leading international freight forwarding and logistics company that provides total logistics solutions with attentive services unique to Japanese companies.

This time, we asked Mr. Nuttapong Tiengtam (Department Manager) and Mr. Wanich Sariya (Assistant Manager) to talk about the production business of packing materials for transportation that are indispensable for logistics.

What is the production of customizable packing materials that meet safety standards and customer needs?

KWE Thailand's packing business had begun with the Thai local logistics company TKK Logistics, which was merged in 2011, producing packing materials for sea freight used only internally. Initially, it was intended for internal use, but the inquiries from customers gradually increased, and now they are running a production business of pallets for customers.

The business has two production plants on its own warehouse premises in Nava Nakorn and Prachinburi that produce mainly wooden pallets and transport crates. Wood with different characteristics from multiple countries is available according to the shipping method and the characteristics of the transportation products.

■ Pine
New Zealand origin
Brazilian and Chilean
Canadian
Lithuanian

■Rubber tree (rubber wood material)
Southern Thailand area: Nakhon Sri Thammarat / Trang origin
Eastern Thailand area: Chanthaburi / Rayong origin

■ LVL material (Laminated Veneer Lumber): Chinese

It is a wood processed product made by bonding multiple thin layers of wood to make it a plate material. It has a very high strength and is compatible with IPPC (International Standard) No.15 in advance, so the fumigation process can be omitted.

These materials are subjected to fumigation to conform to IPPC (International Standard) No. 15, which is required by more than 80 major countries such as China, the EU and the United States. As a result, transport troubles caused by packing materials can be avoided, and trouble-free shipping is enabled smoothly.

Currently, about 40 staffs are operating in production. The work has continued to improve since the beginning of the business, and now they can produce about 15,000 pallets per month. By making full use of this abundant production capacity, they can respond not only to electronics/electric, agricultural tools, and automobiles but also to the demands of a wide variety of customers.

Furthermore, they get as much information as they can through customers and measure packing products, then propose structures and designs that take into account the required strength. In addition, it is also possible for them to make customized products using only information such as the size and specification of the product to be packed.

The newly designed pallet has also achieved reliability by passing the JIS-based quality test conducted at the Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR) at Kasetsart University. In addition, they have acquired ISO9000: 2008 which ensure the strict quality control based on ISO standards and Japanese standards. They are able to transport products to the destination safely even if it takes several months.

At present, in addition to providing packing materials, the system has become capable of transporting equipment in-house. There are Japanese staff who are in charge of equipment transportation exclusively, carrying out everything from the unloading of the important equipment of the customers, packing using the above packing materials, until installation at the destination. All of these services are provided by their own staff under the management of the Japanese supervisor.

Utilizing its strengths to develop and produce high quality packing materials in Thailand

KWE Thailand commenced operation of its second warehouse in December 2017 in an industrial park in Prachinburi, eastern Thailand, near the border with Cambodia. The warehouse can be used as a logistics base with Cambodia, and is a general logistics center with functions as a container depot, packing factory, collection and distribution center, and warehouse. (Currently, there is about 3,000 ㎡ of free space in the warehouse, and it can be used immediately.) The packing factory develops and produces high-quality pallets that can be used for packing products such as automobiles, medical equipment, and chemicals.

KWE Thailand will continue to provide packing materials tailored to the needs of customers, taking advantage of its unique strengths.
