Grinding wheel evaluation, testing, and R&D functions in Thailand! Equipped with the latest equipment such as 3D microscopes

09/11/2022
MITSUI GRINDING TECHNOLOGY (THAILAND) CO.,LTD.

Mitsui Grinding Technology (Thailand) has been manufacturing and selling grinding wheels in Thailand for more than 20 years and providing technical support, with the R&D Center (Research and Development) playing an important role. Our R&D Center is equipped with 3D microscopes and grinders, and conducts grinding tests and analysis activities on our own grinding wheels every day for various purposes. In this article, we will take a closer look at the roles and facilities of our R&D section.

Evaluating the performance of grinding stones with the latest equipment to ensure a more secure choice.

The R&D section evaluates the performance of grinding wheels by testing them with our various equipment and collecting grinding data. This section also complies with requests received from customers for performance comparison data.
There are various manufacturers' grinding wheel in the world. We use performance comparison data, etc., and strive to make our customers feel more secure in choosing our products.

【Main Roles of the R&D Section】
✓ Evaluation tests to confirm grinding wheel performance
✓ Observation and analysis of grinding wheel condition
✓ Analysis and proposals based on accumulated data
✓ Development of new products

Introduction of facilities & operations at the R&D section of Mitsui grinding Technology (Thailand)

Depending on the type of grinding wheel and the purpose of evaluation, the items of the evaluation test differ. For this reason, the R&D section has a variety of equipment.

■Machining center (Komatsu NTC ZV4) Surface grinding, Grinding wheel, MGT Thailand

■Grinder (Okamoto GRIND-X) Surface grinding, Grinding wheel, MGT Thailand

▲After grinding with a grinder, the surface roughness of the workpiece is checked with a surface roughness measuring machine.

Machining centers and grinder actually grind workpieces and evaluate the grinding wheel performance. For example, check how much the performance has improved compared to past grinding wheels. Specifically, the grinding load during machining and the amount of wear on the grinding wheel due to machining are checked, and the surface roughness of the workpiece after machining is measured for comparison and verification. These equipment are also used to evaluate the performance of abrasive grains, which directly affect the performance of grinding wheels, and when developing new bonding agents.

■3D Microscope (KEYENCE Digital Microscope) Surface grinding, Grinding wheel, MGT Thailand
This is a 3D microscope newly installed last year in 2021. It enables a precise check on the surface conditions of grinding wheels and workpieces. In the past, confirmation was done only on a flat surface (2D), but with the implementation of this 3D microscope, it has become possible to observe the uneven state of the grinding wheel surface more accurately. The data is used not only for our own internal use but also utilized for making proposals to our customers.

■Drying oven Surface grinding, Grinding wheel, MGT Thailand It is used to analyze the composition of grinding wheels. The burner located inside removes moisture and melts the grinding wheel to analyze its composition.

■Servo-hydraulic fatigue tester Surface grinding, Grinding wheel, MGT Thailand Fatigue testers apply pressure to grinding wheel to evaluate its bending and breaking strength.

Enhancing R&D (Research and Development) function to focus on new product development in Thailand

Our R&D section is staffed with knowledgeable and experienced personnel who have received training in Japan. By having the R&D function in Thailand, we hope to continuously improve the level of our staff and the company as a whole. We also intend to enhance our facilities over the long term in order to conduct more accurate testing and to meet the needs of our customers in Thailand and abroad.
