Naoki Sakumoto, General Manager of the Engineering Division, reflected on the initiative “I had been wondering whether simply installing solar power generation equipment was really enough. The large-scale power outage in Spain made us realize that we needed to take action.”
For the demonstration project, the company selected a model house equipped with Panasonic’s latest technologies, including energy storage batteries, IoT appliances, and EV chargers. The model house is used to showcase these technologies to customers in Thailand.
The demonstration began in February 2026 and continued for two months. The team intentionally attempted to access inverters and other equipment remotely via the Internet to verify whether suspicious access to the inverter and abnormal behavior could be detected.
The results were highly successful. Sakumoto commented “Being able to respond to suspicious activity from outside in real time means that appropriate action can be taken whenever necessary.” He also emphasized the importance of risk awareness, stating “Only when we become aware of the risks can we further improve our risk management.”
Efforts to Enhance the Security of Renewable Energy Facilities
The partner selected for this demonstration project was Thai NS Solutions Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “Thai NS”), an IT company within the Nippon Steel Group. When asked why Thai NS was selected from among numerous security vendors, Sakumoto explained that the company had extensive experience in cybersecurity projects in Thailand and had actively proposed solutions for the project.
He added “This field is still in its early stages, and we do not yet have a clear picture of everything that can be done. What ultimately made the difference was the sense of trust we had in Thai NS as a partner with whom we could develop the business together.” Based on the results of this demonstration project, Panasonic Solutions (Thailand) plans to work together with Thai NS to further enhance cybersecurity measures for renewable energy facilities.
As renewable energy adoption continues to grow, the focus must extend beyond simply installing renewable energy equipment to ensuring the security and safety of these systems. This demonstration project represents an important first step toward strengthening the cybersecurity of renewable energy facilities in Thailand, and further developments in this area are expected to attract attention.
