This demo shows inspection of the O.D. surface of a cylindrical metal part (here, a driving shaft with one end stepped). Narrow partial images are connected into a single unrolled 2D image.

In this demo, the shaft rotates while the camera captures the O.D. surface continuously in very narrow strips. These partial images are connected into one unrolled 2D image. The inspection items are scratches and contamination on the surface.

Connecting Captured Images into One Unrolled Image

This demo uses the “Extended Acquisition Settings” feature of the Acquisition tool. The workpiece rotates, narrow images are captured and connected, and a 2D image is made — like opening a scroll. There is no distortion from the curved surface, so defects are seen at their actual size. Partial Image Connect uses a normal area camera like a line camera. Several acquisition areas can be set for one capture. So, from the bright area and the dark area, one bright-area image and one dark-area image are made in a single rotation. A line camera needs two rotations; this method needs only one, which shortens the cycle time.

Encoder Synchronization: Fast Capture with No Misalignment

Capture is synchronized with the encoder signal. One image is taken for each rotation step of the workpiece. So even at high rotation speed, the narrow images do not shift or overlap, and the connected image has no seams. Combined with high-brightness lighting, the full O.D. surface can be captured in less than 1 second.

Key Point of This Demo: Keeping Resolution with Two Camera Sets

The feature of this demo is that narrow images from two camera sets are connected. If one camera set captures the whole workpiece, the resolution must be lowered. By sharing the work between two camera sets, the required resolution is kept, and one complete image of the entire workpiece is made for both the bright area and the dark area.
