This demo shows a long connector that does not fit in the field of view of a single capture. Five images are combined into one, so measurement and appearance inspection are done while keeping the resolution.

In this demo, a long connector is captured in 5 images and combined into one inspection image. Then lead measurement and housing appearance inspection are done at the same time.

If a long workpiece is captured in one shot, the resolution goes down, and small defects or small dimensional changes cannot be seen. On the other hand, to keep the resolution, a special high-resolution camera or a large-field lens is needed, and the cost goes up a lot.

Multi-Capture + Image Connect: Inspecting the Full Length at the Required Resolution

In this demo, the connector is captured in 5 images and combined into one seamless inspection image with the Image Connect tool. Image Connect aligns the images at sub-pixel level while joining them, so the partial images are combined into one image with no position shift. Also, each capture area is small, so image quality and lighting uniformity are kept, and the inspection is stable. After combining, the Alignment tool corrects the position of the workpiece. The Connector Lead II tool measures the lead pitch and the lead offset (distance from the datum line). The Blob tool inspects the appearance of the housing. Combined with low-distortion optics, the measurement gives results with high repeatability.

Detectable Defects and Processing Speed

• Measurement: lead pitch, lead offset (datum line – lead)
• Appearance: missing lead, lead deformation, housing dent, contamination, etc.
• Cycle time: 0.6 s/pc (including transfer movement)
• The required inspection accuracy is achieved without a special high-resolution camera or a large lens

This multi-capture + Image Connect method can be used not only for connectors, but for inspection of any long workpiece beyond the camera's single-shot field of view.
