At METALEX 2025, YKT (Thailand) showcased a smart factory solution that visualizes the entire factory by “integrating” key production processes—processing, material handling, and inspection. The solution enables stable production and ensures reliable quality.

We have developed a demonstration solution that combines a fully automatic cutting tool lapping machine, AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots), and an automated 3D measuring system. This solution eliminates dependence on individual operators and aims to establish a production system independent of human skill. This article introduces the key features of each product.

The Importance of a Smart Factory for Real-Time Quality Management

Q1. Why does productivity struggle to improve in many factories?
A. Relying on manual work can lead to variations in operator judgment, dependence on individual skills, and differences in working time. As a result, even when using the same equipment, quality and productivity can vary.

Q2. Why does automating individual processes often fail to deliver results?
A. This happens because equipment and data are fragmented across processes. When automation is implemented only partially, information is not connected, making it difficult to understand the overall situation and identify the sources of losses.

Q3. Why is “quality visualization” the key to automation?
A. Because monitoring quality in real time within the process is essential, rather than checking only after defects occur.

The smart factory envisioned by YKT is not simply about arranging equipment, but about designing the overall factory flow and connecting processes and information.

Fully Automatic Cutting Tool Lapping Machine SURFEDGE
The “long-awaited” practical automatic polishing system

This lapping machine automates surface finishing processes that traditionally depend on operator skill. It allows unmanned edge treatment and flute surface polishing of cutting tools. An original product co-developed by YKT and the manufacturer.

【Key Features】
• Automates the lapping process to reduce operator workload
• Elastic media allows edge treatment, droplet removal, and deburring
• Flexible cassette compatibility for optimized workflow
• Equipped with a Siemens controller
• Full-cover design, redesigned in Malaysia to enhance safety

▲An integrated system that automates tool handling, polishing, and storage

▲Employs proprietary polishing media with diamond powder coating on a polymer elastic material

▲Minimizes tool changeover time using tool grinding machines and shared cassettes

This system “extends tool life” and “improves chip evacuation performance”. Demo machines at the YKT (Thailand) showroom are available for hands-on testing.

NanoGrind Technologies: AMR (Autonomous Mobile Robots)
Make transport automation simple — “try it before you decide”

This AMR automates transport operations in warehouses and manufacturing sites. It meets the needs of a wide range of industries, including food, automotive, manufacturing, and e-commerce. Manufactured in Malaysia with in-house developed software, it is highly cost-effective compared to products from Japanese manufacturers. Furthermore, since it shares the same manufacturer as the lapping equipment, it enables automatic cassette supply when used together.

【Key Features】
• Efficient transport with autonomous route planning
• Safe operation with automatic obstacle avoidance
• Integrated management software developed in-house
• Free trial program available

▲Example of software package

▲Enables automatic cassette supply when paired with a tool lapping machine of the same manufacturer

Initial verification of Japanese manufacturer products can cost millions of yen. At YKT, you can “try the system on-site and assess its effectiveness before deciding to implement it”—at no extra verification cost—making adoption easier.

OGP Non-Contact 3D Measuring Machine SmartScope M Series
Key to Quality Assurance in Smart Factories

This non-contact dimensional measuring machine uses camera-based image processing. Equipped with a multi-sensor, it can handle a wide variety of part shapes and materials in a single unit. Its large depth of field ensures excellent operability and enables highly precise, repeatable measurements.

【Key Features】
• Measurement reference remains stationary, ensuring high accuracy and repeatability
• Multi-sensor system combining lens, probe, and laser
• New optical system maintains a telecentric state across all magnifications
• Capable of measuring hard-to-see shapes, as well as materials like rubber and resin that do not easily absorb light

▲High-resolution images simplify edge detection settings and improve measurement reliability

▲Minimizes image distortion and malfunction risk, eliminating the need for lighting adjustments

OGP, originally a lens manufacturer, applied its optical expertise to develop projectors and measuring machines, becoming a pioneer in dimensional measurement. Its high-precision multi-sensors and exceptional part clarity enable easy measurement and analysis of even complex-shaped parts.
