Sodick (Thailand) Co., Ltd., the leader in the production of EDM, Wire-cut EDM, 3D metal printer (3D Printing), Injection molding machine and so on, has participated in the seminar “Plastic Injection 4.0 - Elevate the Injection Mold Design to the Intelligent Production Process” on 5 March 2020. It was held at the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology, College of Industrial Technology, King Mongkut's University of Technology North Bangkok, Bangkok.

Nowadays, to compete in the plastic product business, we need to look for the technology that will help increase production efficiency from the mold design process including injection molding to obtain the desired quality with the aim of reducing costs so that we can compete in the business. Thus, we need to understand the technology regarding plastic injection molding production to adapt to the current production process.

In this seminar organized by ACMT, Minotec, NSTDA, and ITAP, it was aimed to provide participants with knowledge and understanding of technology to help improve and control the quality of injection mold production which will lead to better quality of injection molding in Thailand.

In this seminar, Sodick (Thailand) Co., Ltd. talked about technology and divided into two topics: “The Advantage of V-LINE Technology of Injection Molding Machines” and “Applying 3D Printing Technology to Injection Molding” by Khun Pachara Prommachan from Sodick (Thailand) Co., Ltd.

 V-line

Advantages of V-LINE Technology of Injection Molding Machines

In the event, Khun Pachara talked about this topic that “Sodick's injection molding machines are more special than conventional injection molding machines. It is called V-LINE technology, which is a system of injection molding machines. Normally, the injection molding machine is In Line.

However, for V-LINE, it has two cylinders. One is used to transport plastic while the other is used to inject plastic into the mold, which will be a separate operation. The reason that they have to operate separately is because the In Line has disadvantages, namely the control of pressure or difficulty of controlling the volume of injections and shots. On the other hand, V-LINE can control injection each time to release equal amount or weight in each shot because, in the end, customers or manufacturers want good quality products with little waste, so the Sodick's V-LINE will be the answer to this need.”

He also added for those interested in this technology that “Sodick's V-LINE products are produced at the factory in Thailand. If anyone is interested, they can contact to view Sodick's products. Our injection molding products are produced in Thailand in 2 models, Hybrid model and 100% electric model.”

V-LINE

In plastic injection molding, temperature control inside the mold is important and the strength point of the company’s product is that it can arrange a three-dimensional cooling pipe freely and can make a product that can efficiently cool even if it has a complicated shape.

Applying the Metal 3D Printing Technology to Injection Molding

On the topic of the Metal 3D Printing technology, Khun Pachara said “As for the Sodick 3D Printing machine, which has been around since 2014, is making the 3D cooling channels inside the mold. So far, the usage of 3D Printing machines in the plastic industrial application was mainly focusing on being a prototype, and they could not control the dimension of the workpiece.

However, Sodick created the new method of the metal molding, so, it achieved to control the dimension and the surface. Therefore, it can be put into real use.

Currently, 3D Printing has 2 types of methods. One is LMD (Laser Metal Deposition), which is the type that welds the metal powder to fill up, and another is DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering). Sodick uses DMLS the way of a laser to weld metal powder together. Sodick combined the Milling function with their 3D Printing machine and that machining data is as same as the conventional way of making the metal parts.

 SRT Method

In addition, SRT Method (Stress Relief Technology) was introduced by Sodick to work with 3D Printing. This new technology was developed to prevent the distortion and cracking the workpiece during the metal mold process, especially for Stainless steel that very hard to use on the process so far. This technology realized to produce the molding with completely.

“The technology of 3D Printing and V-LINE injection. And for V-LINE injection technology, Sodick is the only company that provides injection technology in this way. With both of these technologies, we have continuously developed to meet the needs of users as much as possible.” Khun Pachara Prommachan from Sodick (Thailand) Co., Ltd.

 SRT Method

Khun Pachara also talked about the reason which leaded Sodick to attend this seminar “For this seminar, ACMT was one of the hosts of the seminar and saw that Sodick's technology fits today's industry in Thailand, so we were invited to participate in this seminar.

Sodick (Thailand) Co., Ltd brought our own technology to introduce in the event, including 3D Printing technology and V-line injection technology. And for V-LINE injection technology, Sodick is the only company that provides injection technology in this way. With both of these technologies, we have continuously developed to meet the needs of users as much as possible.”
