It's been a while since the last edition of [No Business No Life], and for the seventh edition, we'd like to talk about "energy-saving," which is currently heating up in Thailand. Mr. Shigeki Takada of the compressor manufacturer ANEST IWATA SOUTHEAST ASIA (hereinafter referred to as ANEST IWATA) has joined us. (* We edited the talks and deliver the conversation video)
Nakamura :Since the beginning of 2021, the number of inquiries about energy-saving from customers in Thailand has increased significantly. Companies that have been reluctant regarding energy conservation are now talking to us about energy efficiency tools, energy-saving ideas, and budget applications for energy conservation. Is there a reason for this?
Takada (honorifics title omitted): I believe that a larger trend is becoming stronger this year than just the idea that companies have been contributing to the environment by reducing their energy consumption through self-help efforts.
I believe that carbon neutrality※1 is one of the main reasons. In addition, indicators and regulations such as the EU Taxonomy※2 have emerged to evaluate investments in sustainable environmental practices. As this trend becomes stronger around the world, there is a possibility that publicly traded companies will have an impact on their stock prices if they do not address environmental issues.
Nakamura:Does this mean that the energy-saving activities of companies will be part of carbon neutrality?
Takada:First of all, each company needs to reduce the total amount of greenhouse gases it is currently emitting to the very limit. If there is no choice but to discharge, it is necessary to reduce the total to zero by emissions trading. If they do not actively promote energy-saving and other measures now, the cost of reducing emissions to zero will be enormous.
※1… Carbon neutrality:An initiative to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions minus the amount absorbed and removed to zero.
※2…EU Taxonomy:Another name for EU regulation 2020/852, which was enacted in the EU in July 2020. It is a regulation for sustainable investment in the EU and aims to establish "criteria for judging whether economic commission activities are environmentally sustainable".
Nakamura:Now I understand that carbon neutrality must be tackled even if it is very difficult. As a compressor manufacturer, what is ANEST IWATA working on?
Takada:The first thing I would like to recommend to all factories is to implement a low-pressure system to lower the set pressure of compressors. This can have a great energy-saving effect at zero cost.
Nakamura:I think that many companies are hesitant to lower the pressure of compressors because they are concerned about the impact on productivity due to insufficient air pressure in the factory. What should we do?
Takada:The first step is to ensure that the pressure in the factory is visualized.
From my experience, it is my understanding that only about 10-20% of the typical factories needs to have high pressure. For those, productivity can be maintained while lowering pressure by installing a special pressure booster to prevent pressure shortages from occurring.
Nakamura:Do you have any tips for installing a pressure booster or ideas for maximizing cost-effectiveness?
Takada:There are two types of pressure boosters, "air-driven" and "electric-driven," and it is important to select the best type according to the amount of air used. However, as the air-driven type consumes air, that may greatly reduce the energy-saving effect of lowering pressure.
Nakamura:For those who want to implement energy-saving practices in the future, can you give us some reference examples?
Takada:At one company, an energy-saving manager reported to his boss that he could expect an energy-saving effect of 100,000 baht a year, but he was told, "100,000 baht will not have much effect." However, when converted to sales, it is equivalent to 1 million baht. "It's hard to make a million baht in sales nowadays," he convinced his boss. By changing the viewpoint, I think that various energy-saving ideas will come up.
